Manitoba exporters should aggressively pursue international trade opportunities despite the Trump administration and others threatening to impose new border tariffs on imported goods, the chief economist for Export Development Canada (EDC) said Wednesday.
Peter Hall told a luncheon gathering of manufacturers and exporters in Winnipeg that he doesn’t believe U.S. President Donald Trump will follow through on earlier threats to dismantle the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and impose punishing new tariffs on goods imported from Canada and Mexico. Hall said doing so would slam the brakes on U.S. economic growth and drive up the cost of goods purchased by American consumers and businesses.
“What I always get back to is the argument that, look, if dismantling this is really going to punish Americans, it’s very unlikely to go forward,” he said in an interview following his address. Click here to read more.
