Ildefonso Guajardo Villarreal, Mexico’s secretary of economy, said Friday that Mexico may not like the idea of the U.S. building a wall at its border, but he acknowledged that the U.S. government has the sovereign right to build whatever it wants on the U.S. side.
“We believe more in bridges and making the border better,” Guajardo said in a media briefing following his speech to the Detroit Economic Club.
And, he said, in efforts to add technological improvements to make the border safe and efficient.
Mexico’s economy minister was guarded in his comments, however, and would not say how talk of building a wall — which President Donald Trump has vowed to do to combat illegal immigration — might influence political discussions and trade talks relating to the North American Free Trade Agreement.
